Park Seo Joon : "Debuting Late Wasn’t Such a Bad Thing" (From an Interview)

In the hit drama series “Fight For My Way”, Park Seo Joon played the spirited Dong Man, a boy-next-door type character who remained boisterous despite numerous setbacks in life.

Park Seo Joon made his movie debut in the police-buddy flick “Midnight Runners” as the energetic cop trainee Ki Joon who leaps to action before thinking. Both characters were the epitome of unquestioningly confident youths with nothing to fear.

Once Park Seo Joon said that, the real Park Seo Joon was not so self-assured. Park Seo Joon decided to begin acting in middle school as a means to escape his crippling shyness.

Park Seo Joon remembered his young days like this “I couldn’t even order food at a restaurant, I was so embarrassed. I wanted to change that. And I have to confess I was drawn a little bit to the glamour of acting.”

Back then Park Seo Joon joined the animation club at his school and participated in his first cosplay event at a school arts festival.

This is how Park Seo Joon shared his first stage experience “That was the first time I wasn’t afraid of people’s attention. It was surprising.”

He also said “I went to an acting academy for the first time when I was in high school. They told me it was too late.”

Park Seo Joon went on to study theater at Kyungpook National University and made his first drama appearance in the 2012 series “Dream High 2” at the age of 24, unlike many actors these days who begin acting in their teens.

Park Seo Joon then starred in the sitcom “I Summon You, Gold!” as the spoiled son of a wealthy family. After that he proved himself a talented romantic lead in the 2014 “Witch’s Romance.”

He began to slowly rise to stardom through the 2015 dramas “Kill Me, Heal me” and “She Was Pretty,” and the 2016 hit drama “Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth.” His performances were unforced and natural. Then his path of success wasn't flower path.

Once Park Seo Joon said “I really don’t like it when you can tell someone is acting. I want to be someone who feels comfortable in every situation. I think you have to be relaxed to be able to listen to others’ thoughts and, in turn, express your own thoughts.”

He shared his secret of success in every different characters like this “I have worked part time. I have attended after-school classes. I have done everything you can do as a teenager in Korea. That helps me play everyday characters. Debuting late wasn’t such a bad thing.”

In “Midnight Runners,” which hit local theaters, Park Seo Joon played a budding cop-in-training. The character was full of passion, tenacity and sincerity. In the film, Ki Joon and his fellow trainee Hee Yeol, played by Kang Ha Neul, chase kidnappers barehanded and without formal police experience, with the sole goal of bringing justice to the world.

Park Seo Joon's chemistry with Kang Ha Neul was pivotal to the comical, youthful rhythm of the two protagonists in the film. “We instantly got along. We might have led different lives but the way we think is very similar,” Park Seo Joon said of Kang Ha Neul, who started out in musicals before moving on to dramas and films.

Finally Park Seo Joon shared his thoughts about acting, “I think acting is more about reaction than action. You have to understand the other actor’s style and react to that, which can bring life to a scene and to a work. I never think that I have to be the star of a scene.”

He is someone who worked hard to this point and he is full of passion. You already know that he is about to make his Hollywood debut in Marvel. Let's congratulate him and look forward to his movie.

Thank You !
